JULIA RAHM
Julia Rahm (SHS Class of 2010). Vocal artist, voice teacher, composer, poet. Julia
has been described as inspirational, positive, genuine, selfless, brave, authentic,
inclusive and courageous. While at SHS, Julia explored all the vocal arts programs
the community had to offer, including the jazz choir, the Americana Project, musical
theater (starring in Grease and Fiddler on the Roof), and at Bend’s Cascades
Theatrical Company. She wrote and directed a one act play, started a diversity
week, began the human dignity coalition, and started the first Gay Straight Alliance.
Julia then attended the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College in New York where she
studied theater, music, and French. She obtained her master’s degree in vocal
performance from Roosevelt University in Chicago and studied for one year at the
École Normale de Musique de Paris. Among her many ongoing projects, Julia is Core
Associate Chorister with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and is a founding
member and the director of social justice & programming for The Valkyrie
Ensemble, a Chicago-based vocal/opera ensemble seeking to promote women and
women’s stories through music. She has continued her writing, and regularly blogs
on poetry and stories. Julia most recently published her first book of poetry “Wild
Heart: Poetic Musings of a Queer Mystic.” A natural leader.
