SHS FALL 1957 FOOTBALL TEAM
The Fall 1957 Sisters High School Football Team won eight games in a row to
claim the school’s first football district and state championships. The team was
lead by a couple of “ground gaining demons,” as the Bend Bulletin called them
Stan Williams and Mike Smith. After losing its first game of the year, the team
went on to steamroll opponents with an explosive offense and hard-hitting defense,
including playoff wins over Condon, Irrigon, and Alsea. In the State Championship
game, Sisters beat Alsea 73-27, putting an explanation point on its championship
run. The team was deep for a six-man football squad, fielding nineteen total
players. Members of the team included Gilbert Daniels, John Shaw, Frank Morton,
Gordon Mouser, Gary Benson, Stan Williams, Butch Larson, Doug Hockett, Denny
Reese, Denny Day, Mike Smith, Steve Seigner, Jack Lowery, Sam Hewitt, Bill
Martin, Rich Bowers, Lee Thomas, Donnie Mouser, Doug Poffenbarger, and Colen
Reinecker. The team was coached by Tom Cox (Head Coach) and Wayne Pierce
(Assistant Coach). Smith and Williams were the co-captains. Williams and Smith
also were selected to participate in the East-West Shrine Game and Central
Oregon All-Stars, while Mouser was an alternate and Day was honorable-mention.
By capturing the 1957 title, the Sisters got its first taste of a football state
championship setting the stage for many more. Many of these same players were
on the SHS eight-man state champions of 1959 and 1961.
