T.K. PHELPS
Thomas Kelly (“TK”) Phelps (SHS Class of 1996). TK has been recognized as one of the
greatest all-around athletes to come out of Sisters High School. TK, all of 5’9” and 130 lbs.
soaking wet in high school, excelled in several fields and was a leaper extraordinaire. He
attended SHS starting in 1992 and was part of the first class to attend SHS all four years after
re-commencement of the high school during fall 1992. On the football field, TK was a wide
receiver, catching passes for most of his high school career from Nick Fouts. He held the SHS
career receiving record, which lasted for 10 years, and also started on defense as a safety,
calling coverages. TK played basketball as a shooting guard, playing under his father and
coach Bob Phelps and then under coach Rand Runco. He was a defensive specialist who, at
times, was known to cover the tallest player on the opposing team due to TK’s leaping
ability. Those hops also led to excellence on the track and field, where he excelled as a
jumper and sprinter. He high jumped 6’8” during his high school career, and won the state
championship in the long jump in 1996. He also was a member of the 4 x 400 relay team that
won the 1996 state championship. TK entered the United States Air Force after high school,
and after receiving an honorable discharge, settled in Texas to study and specialize in
assisting those with post-traumatic stress disorder.
